What is a Hasselback potato?

The Hasselback potato originated from a restaurant in Stockholm that was named Hasselbacken during the ’50s. The potatoes are simply sliced but not too close near the base, seasoned with your favorite herbs and seasonings, and then baked.

How to make Hasselback potatoes

Ingredients:

  • Yukon gold potatoes – you can use any other potatoes as well
  • butter unsalted and melted
  • fresh parsley
  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • flaky sea salt to taste
  • black pepper
  • cheese – optional

Feel free to use other seasonings like paprika, cayenne pepper for some spice, thyme, sage, or fresh rosemary. The seasoning combos are endless.

Prepare your potatoes by washing and drying them. Pull out your cutting board and a sharp knife.

One trick to cutting the potatoes is to place chopsticks on each side of the potato to avoid cutting all the way through the potatoes.

Preheat the oven and place a piece of foil or parchment paper on the baking sheet. Transfer the sliced potatoes to the baking sheet.

Once you cut the potatoes mix your melted butter and seasonings and brush the mixture on top of the potatoes.

Bake for 30 minutes then baste with the leftover butter seasoning. Bake for another 10-20 minutes until golden and crisp. Top with fresh parsley, feel free to add cheese as well.
