How to make homemade hummus

  • Soak your dried chickpeas overnight or quick soak them by boiling for 5 minutes and let them sit covered for an hour.
  • After soaking drain the chickpeas and add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to them on low heat. Stir them around for about a minute. Pour water back over them and let them simmer.
  • Skim off any foam and chickpea skins. When the chickpeas are soft they are ready. Drain and rinse under cold water.
  • Try to get rid of most of the chickpea shells – let them rest
  • Squeeze 2 lemons and peel half a garlic head. Blend these together in your food processor first.
  • Now add the tahini, and blend with the lemon and garlic mixture until you see it become clumpy
  • Start adding cold water little by little until smooth
  • Add in your chickpeas, olive oil, and salt. Blend until its nice creamy.
  • Top with more olive oil, a sprinkle of paprika and serve!

Adding the baking soda will break down the chickpea skins making it easy to remove so you don’t have to peel them one by one. Who has time for that?!

You could also use canned chickpeas but if you want the best tasting hummus then start with dried chickpeas. Canned chickpeas are already cooked so they contain more sodium.

But I know everyone doesn’t have the time to quick boil them or maybe you forgot to soak them overnight and you want your hummus now! haha

Maybe a solution for you could be to find canned chickpeas with low sodium and try not to add too much salt while making the hummus.

Look how smooth and creamy… I’m drooling, how about you?

What to eat with hummus

  • Pita bread/pita chips
  • Veggies – carrots, red and green bell peppers, celery, olives, pickled cucumbers
  • Hummus toast with veggies on top
  • Raw onions and tomatoes
  • Falafel

The options are endless! You can really get creative here.

Is hummus healthy?

Hummus is healthy if you’re making it from scratch. Buying store-bought hummus you can run into ones made with canola oil, soybean, and other additives that are not considered clean eating. Also depending on your diet hummus may or may not be healthy for you.

  • Hummus can be keto-friendly if consumed in moderation
  • It’s gluten-free
  • Dairy-free
  • Egg-free
  • And it’s vegan

Making your own hummus is really worth it when you want just the main ingredients and nothing more.

How long can you keep homemade hummus?

Hummus can be frozen in an airtight container for a few months but make sure to leave some space at the top as it will expand. This will also last in the fridge for about a week. Great for meal prepping.
