Best way to mash sweet potatoes

There are many ways to mash potatoes and it can depend on the texture you are looking for:

  • A fork – if you don’t mind a coarser mashed potato
  • Potato Masher – the traditional way to mash potatoes; chunks
  • Hand mixer – leaves them light and fluffy with some chunks
  • Food processor – get the silkiest and smoothest texture (careful not to purée them)

I usually use a hand mixture and love to have some chunks in my mashed potatoes. Do you prefer silky or chunky mashed potatoes?

Mashed sweet potato flavor variations

You can make these mashed sweet potatoes more savory or sweet, all depends on you and your preference and what you’re serving it with.

Garlic – add some minced sautéed garlic and fresh herbs like parsley or chives to give the mashed potatoes more of a savory flavor.

Candied Bacon – Cut up some slices of bacon and cook it in a frying pan. Then stir in a tablespoon of brown sugar and cook it for 2 more minutes. Serve on top the mashed potatoes.

Brown sugar and cinnamon – while mashing, add in 1/4 cup of packed brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Mix well and serve for a sweeter mashed sweet potato.
