What is Sweet Potato Casserole?

Is it a dessert or a side dish? Maybe a little of both if you ask me. That’s why Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays, your side dish is also dessert!

Sweet potato casserole is one of the most traditional American side dishes served during the holidays. Filled with fall spices, pecans, and topped with streusel and sometimes marshmallows.

This side dish is always gone when I make this for family and friends. If you haven’t tried making this yourself give it a try because this recipe is delicious and easy!

Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecan Streusel Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes – for this recipe I used about 4 pounds of sweet potatoes.
  • Brown sugar – This makes the sweet potatoes have just the right amount of sweetness. Light or dark brown will work.
  • Butter – makes this dish creamy and smooth
  • Fall spices – cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and cloves will take this sweet potato casserole to the next level.
  • Pecans – Give the sweet potato casserole the perfect crunch. If you’d like to omit the nuts feel free to do so. This recipe will still shine without them.
  • Marshmallows – If you want to give your casserole an extra treat then top it with some mini marshmallows. No one can resist toasted marshmallows!

Can I make Sweet Potato Casserole Ahead of Time?

Yes you can. I know Thanksgiving and holidays can be overwhelming especially when you may be the only one cooking for your friends and family. So you can totally prep this the day before!

  1. Make the sweet potato mixture with all your spices and everything combined. Pour into your casserole dish and it let rest in the fridge until the next day.
  2. Bring the sweet potato casserole to room temp and then top with the pecan streusel topping and then near the end add marshmallows if you wish.
  3. Bake until golden brown and enjoy!
